I'm not concerned with the morbidity of death, but rather the curiosity. A body that used to be animated becomes food for some later participant in the cycle, or the dirt we clean off our windowsill, leaving behind whatever life it made for itself for whatever happens when things die. There is beauty in the quiet transition from bird to dust, from bone to oil. I photograph these subjects not to insist upon the fact of death but to investigate life.

This is an ongoing project.

These images sprang from my desire to return to a more tactile process within my art making. With the use of digital photography and traditional presentation, my images began to feel more transient and disposable, and I felt increasingly disconnected from my work. Utilizing paper negatives to create these images as well as applying epoxy resin and creating an installation allowed me to become intimately connected to the work, and at the same time create objects that are much more tangible.

There seems to be something of sadness, conflict, and grief in the images. At the onset, there was no other concept than to utilize an alternative process to create portraits. As I began to work with the models, however, a common thread began to emerge. The resultant series of photographs seems as much a group of self-portraits as images of others.</description>

As it became more and more apparent that my grandfather, whom I referred to my entire life as Pepa, was nearing the end of his life, I began to think about what it meant to be alive, and more importantly, what it meant to die. Having a life-long love of science, I found comfort in the notion that everything that lives will expire, and that our bodies are merely vessels for something greater. The images in this series are a documentation of my exploration of mortality, as well as spirituality and family.

Non-silver photography refers to a group of alternative photographic processes that use materials other than traditional gelatin silver emulsions. Using materials such as watercolor pigments, iron salt, and printmaking techniques, non-silver processes allow one to create photographic imagery with a great degree of precision, but also with a great amount of control over the aesthetic qualities of the final image.

The processes utilized for the photographs in this gallery include photogravure, cyanotype, gum bichromate, and collotype. Working with these processes allows for the possibility of happy accidents, work that has a life of its own, and a sense of aesthetic authenticity. In this age of amazing digital technology, I feel compelled to make work that is tactile both in process and presentation, creating an experience for myself in the production of the images, and for the viewer in their interaction with the pieces.

In Sévres, France, a vault with three separate locks contains, under three glass domes, the 132-year-old platinum-iridium cylinder that represents the standard mass of a kilogram. It has been measured against replica standards at approximately 40-year intervals, and it has been different each time. If this supposed scientific constant is in a state of change, how could we hope that something as evanescent as our recollections could remain immutable?

I am fascinated by memory. I am as interested in theories of contemporary neuroscience that discuss the deterioration of our memories, brought on by the very act of remembrance, as I am in Honoré de Balzac’s opinion that the attempt to preserve a subject through photography physically diminishes it. The title In Search Of Lost Time refers to Marcel Proust’s tome of the same name. It was previously translated as Remembrance of Things Past, and I can’t help but think that he would smile a little to know that even title of his book has changed over time. Proust’s words about his memories, penned nearly a century ago, reflect what neuroscience is discovering now: that memory is malleable, imperfect, and ephemeral.

Robert Adams wrote that Robert Frost once answered a person who asked him what one of his poems meant by saying, “You want me to say it worse?”

The idea of the search is key for me. Rather than approach art making with hopes of finding an answer, I love being led by the question, stumbling upon a new thread, and following the questions that that new curiosity generates. I invite you to share in that process, and thank you for taking the time to look.

Frederick Scott Archer introduced the wet plate collodion process in 1851. The process allowed a repeatable negative to be created, which was an improvement upon the unique image produced by the daguerreotype process. Another advantage of the wet plate negative was the sharp reproduction of detail, which the paper negatives of the day lacked. I am not interested in either of those benefits.

Ambrotypes, like daguerrotypes, are unique images. Created by placing a dark background behind an underexposed wet plate negative, the resultant positive image can be displayed as soon as it comes out of the camera and is developed, dried, and varnished, with no printing required. There is something beautiful about the absence of that intermediary, the fact that the light that bounces off of my subject strikes the sensitized plate and the final image is made in the camera, the result of this direct interaction.

The wet plate practitioners of the past were masters. Their exposures were exact, their plates flawlessly poured. I am more interested in collaboration with this process than mastery of it. The serendipitous mistakes, anomalies, and flaws that would have ruined one's plate during the 19th century are the same aesthetic occurrences that draw me to this process.
